On Top Down Under : We Won

December 14, 2014

We Won!! Alinghi was crowned champions of the 2014 Extreme Sailing Series today after wrapping up a win in the final Act of the series. After a nail biting series of back and forth lead changes between us and The Wave, Muscat, we came on strong at the end of the day, and secured the Act and the Series!

It's such a great way to end the year. The team sailed fantastically all year, finishing no worse than third and notching up 5 event wins, and two second place finishes.

Today's conditions couldn't have been any better for the racing either. Sydney's typical conditions showed up with great wind, warm temperatures and lots of sunshine. The wind was in an almost perfect direction for the course to have long windward/leewards, but still shifty enough to add the excitement of passing lane possibilities.

The day started pretty well with us finishing the first race with a fourth and adding a couple more points to our lead. The next race, we got in a spot of trouble and earned a penalty at the same time as getting our rudder bumped. We had to sail the boat slowly and gingerly around the course so as to not break anything but to still score a point. Finished that race last. Next followed two 6th place finishes and a 4th. This allowed The Wave to climb back into the top spot on the overall leaderboard. But then we found our stride again.

Our next two races were a first and a second, which put us back on top with a two point lead going into the final double-points race.

At the start, things were tight and we ended up tacking to port with 20 seconds to go. It ended up working out really well, but had some of us watching a little nervously. At the other end of the line, The Wave got in a bit of trouble with their acceleration and ended up having to tack out shortly after the start gun was fired. We came out of the right side of the course flying and rounded the top mark in first, with Oman Air tight on our heels and The Wave deep in the fleet. From there, the boys sailed clean and smart to make sure The Wave was always in our cover zone. We ended up losing Oman Air half way through the race but maintained a nice gap between us and third to comfortably sail across the finish line in second place giving us the win for the Act and the Series!

I'm very happy for the team. Last year we finished in second so it was great to come out this year and top it off!
